App-controlled LED strip lights are one of the cheapest ways to change how a room feels, and you don't need any electrical know-how to install them. Here's what to know before you stick the first strip to the wall.
Measure before you buy. Strips are sold by length, and running short mid-wall means an awkward gap or a second strip with a visible seam. Measure the full run you're covering - along a desk, behind a TV, around a skirting board - and round up slightly, since corners and curves use a little more than a straight-line measurement suggests.
Check the power source. Most app-controlled strips run off USB or a plug-in adapter, not batteries, so confirm there's an outlet near where you're installing before you commit to a spot. Behind a TV or under a desk is usually easiest, since the cable can stay hidden.
What the app actually adds. Beyond colour changes, most apps let you set brightness, schedule on/off times, and sync colours to music - useful for a desk setup or a gaming corner, less necessary for a hallway. If you don't care about any of that, a simpler remote-controlled strip without the app will do the same basic job for less.
Installation tips that save frustration. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol before sticking the adhesive backing down - dust and oils are the main reason strips fall off within a week. Install in one continuous pass rather than stopping halfway, since re-sticking a peeled section rarely holds as well the second time. And don't cut the strip except at the marked cut lines, usually every few centimetres - cutting elsewhere can damage the circuit for that whole segment.
