Wallets have quietly split into two very different categories over the last few years: the slim card holder and the traditional fold-out wallet. Which one fits your pocket, your lifestyle, and your habits is worth thinking through before you buy.
Card holders are built for minimalists. If you mostly tap-and-go with two or three cards and rarely carry cash, a slim card holder removes the bulk entirely. They slide easily into a front pocket, work well with phone cases that have built-in card slots, and tend to be the cheaper option. The trade-off is limited capacity - if you carry loyalty cards, receipts, or more than four or five cards, they get tight fast.
Traditional wallets suit people who still carry cash, multiple cards, ID, and the odd receipt or photo. Bifold and trifold wallets offer dedicated slots, a cash compartment, and sometimes a coin pocket. They're bulkier in a back pocket but far more practical if you're not ready to go fully digital or cardless.
RFID protection matters either way. Contactless card skimming is a real risk with tap-to-pay cards, so look for RFID-blocking material regardless of which style you choose - it's a small feature that meaningfully reduces fraud risk.
Material is a long-term decision. Genuine leather wallets develop a worn-in look over time and tend to last years with basic care. PU leather and synthetic options are cheaper and more weather-resistant but show wear faster.
If you're unsure, the simplest rule is this: count how many physical cards you actually use weekly. Three or fewer, go slim. More than that, stick with a traditional fold wallet. Browse our Wallets & Card Holders range for RFID-safe options in both styles.
